Over-Belt Magnetic Separators and Lifting Magnets
Whenever tramp iron has to be separated from bulk materials,
overbelt magnetic separators and lifting magnets take up the
challenge with a strength which is irresistible. Whether the
material is lignite, hard coal, ores, minerals, wood shavings-
and chips, natural construction materials, magnetic separators
are the tools to choose.

Over-belt magnetic separators consist essentially of a magnet
and an endless discharge belt. They are positioned close to the
transport conveyors carrying the material to be sorted, so that
the material has to pass through the magnetic field generated by
the magnet. Tramp iron is lifted out of the material and up onto the
endless discharge belt which conveys it out of the magnetic field
to the side of the transport conveyor or to a discharge point.
The material to be sorted does not come into contact with the
magnet and there are no losses due to fines adhering to the iron
particles.

This system is controlled by a metal detector upstream
of the magnetic separator and offers the following
advantages:
  • No energy is consumed when there is no tramp iron to
be separated, as the magnet is only activated when the
    metal detector detects tramp iron.

  • There is no continual heating up of the magnet, which
means that the strength of the magnetic field is virtually
double when the unit is switched on. On the one hand
the operating time is reduced but on the other hand the
overbelt magnetic separator is permanently switchend
    on at a low setting.
Lifting magnets are used if tramp iron is found only occasionally
in material. They consist essentially of a permanent- or electro-
magnet and possibly a device which raises and lowers it.

Unlike over-belt magnetic separators, lifting magnets do not
discharge the separated tramp iron particles but retain them.
